Modern health promotion increases individual control over person’s own health. Health promotion covers different interventions that benefit and protect health and daily quality of life by tackling disparities in health. Technology is a keen part of health promotion and makes healthcare more personalized and precise. In order to cope with enormous and available health information people need knowledge and skills to obtain and understand information and to make healthy choices e.g. the food they eat and healthcare services they need. Patient safety as an idea has been present in health care throughout centuries. However, the awareness on systemic safety and risk management has become more prominent during the last decades, after investigations of major accidents in other industries. Latent, situation related factors have often been identified as root causes of adverse events also in healthcare, recently recognized as a complex adaptive system. In addition to understanding the impact of human factors and non-technical skills, it is important to broaden the focus from learning from adverse events to sustaining safety in everyday work – to managing complexity.
